Why should I pay to volunteer abroad?

You are giving free services, and therefore it’s fine to wonder why you should pay, Here are the insights into that;

As a volunteer organization which is non-profit Destiny Garden Voluntourism registration certificate no.47643, we need to maintain quality services with the opportunities we provide and therefore require funds to run these services. We do not receive any funding support of the government either. We depend on the funds that the volunteers pay to ensure that they are getting what they paid for as they go abroad to volunteer.

Besides the sustenance fee for a volunteer organization, you as a volunteer has a lot to benefit from the services that are offered such as experience building for students. The support the institutions gives during your stay in foreign countries also counts for you comfortable and safe stay.

It’s your right to have detailed information on how your funds with spend during your volunteer program and volunteer programs with reputation will issue you with that. You should be made aware of all the costs involved and feel free to ask for expenditure or visit the links for a fee on their website.

What are you expected to pay?

The total amount of funds you pay are inclusive of the application or processing fees. However specific programs such as nursing and doctor may require you to pay some extra amount for issues to do with licensing and other medical regulations.

The funds you may help to sustain the volunteer organization to pay for their operating expenses such as staff salaries and marketing among others. Without such funds, the volunteer placement institution won’t provide the quality services and support that you will need while in the foreign lands. The fees you pay also gets directed towards the project that you have selected to be part of abroad and the country.

Furthermore, these funds are extended to your host family to provide food, accommodation, and other logistics, in-country office expenses and the country coordinators salary. These are very important to ensure your safety, comfort and to have a fulfilling volunteer work experience.

You will volunteer with DGV at $285 per week within Kenya and $300 in Rwanda.

At DGV we do not have other hidden costs and more than 50% of your contribution goes to serve the communities you choose to volunteer with during your program. Volunteering with us will give opportunities to volunteer at local charitable Schools, local clinics, hospitals and health centers in Mombasa, Kenya and Kigali in Rwanda as this will help to meet the health and educational needs of needy communities including orphaned children aged 2½ to 17 years in the East African Community.

Who can volunteer?

This program is suitable for students, gap year programs, and people taking sabbaticals, a career change or in retirement. You will work with a professional organization. You will be part of DGV’s team the moment you arrive at the airport.

Volunteers come from all walks of life, young and old, with the energy, skills, and desire to work in an exceptional community service project away from home.

How long would my placement be?

Volunteers can stay for a short or long-term; it’s really up to you. Your placement may be for 1 or 2 weeks or months or even longer. All volunteers whether the short or long term will benefit from volunteering at DGV and even in one week can have a significant impact on the children and staff at the CHARITABLE SCHOOL and local Health Centres. You will be supported and guided in every way possible. In an emergency, you will not be alone. We will be there to assist you.

Where would you stay?

You will stay in the volunteer house provided for by the organization coordinator and mostly live with these families who are only a few minutes from the schools and health institutions not far from the projects. You will have breakfast and evening dinner at home of the directors from Monday to Friday and lunch at the school. At the weekend, all meals will be at home. We can also cater for any special dietary requirements. There is WIFI at home, but this is limited; there are however several internet cafés in town. Bedrooms may be shared depending on the number of guests

What about flights and transport from the airport?

If you are booking your placement directly with Destiny Garden Voluntourism, you will have to arrange your own flights. There are many websites, and travel agents who can assist you with this and good deals can be found. Most flights will require you to change at Nairobi for an internal flight to Mombasa where you will be met at the airport by one of the DGV staff. For our Kigali, Rwanda projects you will meet one of our team member available and hosted or booked in a hotel with affordable rates for accommodation and food.

How much will it cost me to volunteer?

We work very hard to keep costs down especially for you, the volunteer and at the same time provide a quality service while you are with us. Our charges are weekly and the same irrespective of the length of your placement. These are the fees used for accommodation and food during your stay.

The equivalent charges are payable in your local currency at the exchange rate at the time of booking. A booking deposit of US$ 120 or Euros 110 or GBP 113 non-refundable is required to secure your volunteer placement inclusive in the weekly pay.
